Options Trading Strategy: Option Trading Software Considerations
Incorporation into your brokerage account
When evaluating an option trading software package for your options trading strategy, find out whether or not the platform will integrate with your options brokerage account and how seamlessly it will operate. Many of the top option trading software packages are offered through brokerages and as such, you will need an account with the applicable brokerage. Additionally, some platforms "partner" with brokerages and are not directly owned or offered by that brokerage. Finally, some platforms are stand alone and allow you to use powerful features to trade at any brokerage you choose.
Asset selection
Another incredibly important consideration is the asset range that the software package will work with. As you develop your options trading strategy to suit your risk tolerance level and trading style, you will almost certainly gravitate toward trading a particular asset. Be sure that the platform that you're evaluating can provide powerful feedback on the particular asset that you will likely use it to trade.
Paper trading or "back testing" analysis
As you integrate a strategy into your investment portfolio, you will evaluate each strategy as a paper trade prior to its implementation, meaning you will execute a series of fictional trades without investing capital to test a strategy before its implementation. Be sure that the platform that you're considering allows you to track paper trades as well as "back testing" so that you can carefully plan your strategy. Back testing allows you to use actual past historical market events to see how your strategy would have fared in nearly any market environment.
Analysis and reporting
The most important factor in determining the software package that suits your trading style is the level of analysis and reporting that you require. After all, this is the primary reason for employing a platform of this nature. Does the software produce the reports and historical analysis that you will need to successfully execute your strategy? There are so many powerful features integrated into a platform that you'll want to know which you will value and use on a daily basis.
Again, this is not meant to be an exhaustive list of considerations when evaluating an option trading software for your options trading strategy, however, these factors are a good starting point for your research. With proper evaluation and due diligence, I'm confident you'll find a platform that will suit your options trading strategy.
