How to Clean Algae From Aquarium Glass

    • 1). Add a few drops of a liquid algae destroyer to the aquarium each time you do a water change. This will not remove existing algae, but it will remove dissolved algae in the water and prevent it from sticking to the glass.

    • 2). Place the scraper side of the magnetic algae cleaner inside the tank and the other side outside the tank. Grasp the handle on the algae cleaner and move it up and down to remove the growth from the inside of the glass. The magnetic scraper is best at cleaning the middle of the tank. It can get caught up in the gravel and decorations at the bottom. Always use the magnetic algae scraper with the tank full--you do not need to empty the tank to clean the algae from the glass.

    • 3). Wipe the remaining algae from the inside of the aquarium glass with a paper or soft towel that won't scratch the glass. Dip the paper towel in hot water first to help remove more algae.

    • 4). Stock your aquarium with fish that eat algae, which will reduce the build-up of algae in the first place. The plecostomus and algae eater are both good choices for community tanks. Both fish are peaceful and not aggressive with other fish. Both also move up and down the aquarium glass, attaching themselves to the glass with their sucker-like mouths and eating the algae as they go.

    • 5). Clean the aquarium glass on a weekly basis. You do not need to remove all the algae when you clean the tank--in fact removing all the algae could cause it to grow back thicker and heavier.
