    • 1). Ask your doctor how clomiphene citrate is used. Most often, the drug is (at its most basic description) known to increase levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and lutenizing hormone (LH) in the system, thereby increasing successful ovulation.

    • 2). Request information regarding side effects. In many women clomiphene citrate causes some abdominal bloating and discomfort, breast tenderness and headache, among other side effects.

    • 3). Take clomiphene citrate according to your doctor's instructions. This drug is usually taken in three courses; 50 mg/day for five days, then 50 mg/day for another day if ovulation is successful. If ovulation is not successful, the doctor may prescribe 100 mg/day for five days. The third course is usually not necessary but your doctor will discuss options with you if you have not successfully ovulated during the first two therapy courses.

    • 4). Ask your doctor about exactly when to start taking the clomiphene citrate. In most cases, the daily therapy is started on the fifth day after the woman's last period. The process may also involve daily measurements of temperature.

    • 5). Check your dosage. Clomiphene citrate typically comes in tablet form in 50 mg strength, but verify your dosage and schedule with your doctor before you leave his or her office to ensure you understand medication instructions.
