- 1). Make sure the train has come to a complete stop. If the train is moving at all, it could jeopardize your attempt to evacuate.
- 2). Listen for instructions. The Metro train operator may give you instructions over the loudspeaker. He may indicate that the train will continue to move to the next station, or that you will have to evacuate in the tunnel.
- 3). Leave your belongings. You will not be able to bring your umbrellas, luggage, bags, strollers, bikes or even wheelchairs. If you are able-bodied, help those who need assistance.
- 4). Walk to the center of the car to exit. If the doors fail to open, you may have to use the emergency door release.
- 5). Look for the lights. Only one side of the tunnel will have lights. This is the side with a walkway where you can get to safety. Only exit the train on that side.

Watch your step. Step directly onto the walkway. Avoid the high-voltage rails and paddles. There is enough electricity running through these rails to electrocute you, and they may not be easy to see while you're in the tunnel. Use a flashlight if you have one. If not, try using the light from your cell phone. - 7). Find a blue light. When you are traveling on the walkway in the tunnel, you will come across a blue light about every 800 feet. Under these blue lights are emergency phones. Pick up the phone and dial "0" to talk to the Metro Control Center. If the train operator has not done so, let them know you are walking through the tunnel. If you can, tell them how many people are with you and if there are any injuries.
- 8). Follow the walkway to the next Metro station. Once you reach the station, you may exit. During an emergency, it will be important to let Metro security know that your group has exited the tunnel and the Metro station.
