Lifting weights and working is one of the main characteristics of modern living, and the ever growing popularity makes the impression that it is here to stay.
Along with the fitness trend, came many waves of products to support the public's desire for results.
Energy bars, Power drinks, Whey protein shakes and many more have come to substitute a healthy meal of grain and vegetables.
Nutrition is far more complex then simply putting food in our mouths.
Sure enough, after a workout we need some protein to help us gain more muscle, yet our body is so much more complex then food-science can comprehend.
There are a number of issues that are not discussed that widely, and are very important for anyone working out.
The most common supplement is Protein powder, and alongside the obvious benefits in helping the muscle grow faster comes a few issues no one likes to talk about.
Here are a few of the potential dangers revolving the steady consumption of large amounts of protein:
  • Exhaustion of the Liver
  • Exhaustion of the Kidneys
  • Sterility
  • Bone loss
  • Cancer
  • Joint pain
The subject is a very "hot" one, and many debates are going on in the professional levels.
Along side the industrial sponsored research which is sales oriented, other studies are being done, and it is always amazing for me to see the different conclusions different research teams will have from conducting similar tests.
The facts about Whey protein are like any other supplement - it can help and it can hurt, depending on a large variety of variables.
For those who are pathologically skinny and must gain some weight for medical reasons, adding more construction materials to the system might help.
For others, such as teenage boys that are in the prime of their growing cycle, adding this large amounts of protein to the diet might be too much stress for the system.
Too little is known about it, yet too many people consume it without knowing how to use it properly and reduce the risk factors.
What should I eat after working out? A well balanced meal is the answer.
Indeed, protein is very much needed for the cycle of muscle growth, but it cannot be absorbed without carbs.
Yet, knowing the secrets of proper food combining, we know that protein rich food does not mix too well with carbs in the stomach, and can cause bloating, abdominal pain, and will create a process that will stop the digestion of protein.
We might think we are eating well with fruits, and seeds and vegetables, yet our nutrition level is actually low.
The best thing to do after a workout is to immediately raise the blood-sugar level using some carb, and not by eating protein.
It is best to begin the process a couple of minutes before you end up the workout, by eating a fruit.
After the workout is done, a well balanced meal will include a few non-starchy vegetables and a fair amount of protein, preferably non-animal.
You may want to add just a little bit of carb into the meal after a while, to see the results.
Most people will notice right away, that the mixing of protein and carbs will cause the stomach to react in some unpleasant way.
Do your workout smart, avoid hurting your body, and eat what you need.
The most important thing to remember is not to over do it, as we sometimes get carried away and damage our body in ways that may come to light after many years.
