With the right decorations, food and entertainment, you can make your creepy, horror-themed bash an event to remember. Whether you're having guests over for an eerie Halloween experience, or you're going a bit scary and unconventional for your upcoming birthday celebration, putting some thought into your theme will ensure that your party's a spooky success. - Whether or not your friends are "Twilight" fans, a vampire-themed party will have your guests speaking in Dracula-style accents and making blood-sucking puns throughout the evening. Make sure that you have some bloody beverages on hand: Red wine, anyone? For the menu, look for foods that have red hues and juicy centers. Think steak grilled to medium rare, or stuffed chicken breasts with a red pepper sauce. Mini pizza bites work well as appetizers, and chocolate-covered strawberries, red fruit pies or jam-filled cookies are sinfully delectable desserts. If you're partying with a crowd that's young or young at heart, get your guests to dive for fangs. Prepare bowls of red Jello beforehand with gummy fangs hidden inside. Players have to go after the edible teeth, using just their mouths to munch through the Jello. Have your camera ready to snap friends' "bloodstained" vampire faces once the game is over.
- Celebrate the undead by throwing a ghastly zombie party. Decorate with mannequins decked out in ripped clothing and ghoulish makeup, and encourage guests to dress to match. Put on a favorite zombie flick, but keep the volume low to facilitate conversation. Consider films from the "Resident Evil" series. If you have a costume contest, give out zombie-themed prizes. For example, you could award a copy of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," a zombie-literature best-seller. Remember that zombies like to dine on brains and guts, so pasta is a fitting dinner choice. Later on, gather guests to watch Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and work together to imitate the iconic group dance.
- If you don't want to get too specific with your theme, throwing a generic haunted house party is the way to go. Have a movie room, where guests can gather to watch their favorite ghoulish flicks, and a separate room for mingling and conversation. Play a spooky sound effects CD softly in the background for the duration of the evening. Keep the lights low and decorate the entire party area with cobwebs, plastic bugs, bats and spooky Halloween accessories. Kraft Canada recommends visiting a local florist and asking for dead flowers to put together a scary centerpiece. Have a Halloween house of horrors, where guests reach in without looking to feel eyeballs (peeled grapes), guts (cold, cooked spaghetti) and cold hands of death (latex gloves filled with water, tied shut and frozen).
- For the fearless only, seance parties are sure to send shivers up guest spines. Buy a Ouija Board (commonly available at toy stores) and invite guests over for an evening of communing with the spirit world. Light lots of candles for atmosphere and decorate the room simply. Try a plain white tablecloth with a red place mat to display the Ouija board prominently.
If your seance gets a bit too creepy, move the party in front of the television to watch some ghostly movies. Supply lots of cozy blankets and pillows along with comfort-food munchies. Film suggestions include "The Sixth Sense" and "The Others."
