Side Effects of Triamterene
- Triamterene, available as the brand Dyrenium and in generic form, is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and edema. It is useful for edema caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder.
- Common side effects associated with triamterene include nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, light-headedness, dry mouth, headache and lack of energy.
- Because triamterene retains potassium in the body, it can raise potassium levels to dangerous levels. This is more likely in elderly people and in patients with kidney disorders, diabetes or a severe illness.
- Taking triamterene with food or milk can prevent nausea. Patients also should ask their doctor about avoiding salt substitutes or foods that contain potassium.
- Many drugs can increase triamterene's side effects. They include alcohol, cold medicines, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure medications and drugs that treat depression or anxiety. Additionally, triamterene interacts with certain drugs that treat blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
