What Are D-rings on a Helmet?

    Design

    • D-rings get their name for their shape, which resembles that of a capital letter D. The flat portion of the D-ring is secured into the strapping system, allowing the D-ring to hang flush with the strap. The curved portion of the D-ring allows the strap to be pulled through for adjustment with minor resistance.

    Function

    • There are two D-rings used in a strap system. The dual-ring design allows the strap to be secured with a simple knotting procedure. When the D-ring system is secured, the rings supply opposing tensions to the strap. This keeps the strap from loosening.

    Use

    • To secure a D-ring strap system, pull the strap through the center of both D-rings until it is at the desired tension. Loop the end of the strap back on itself and route it back through the first D-ring, folding the strap over the top of the second D-ring in the process. Grip the first D-ring and pull the strap taut, securing it in place.

    Benefits

    • When compared to other strap-securing mechanisms, D-rings are the simplest and most reliable. Mechanisms, such as buckles and clips, require heavier, more complicated hardware to secure the strap. Since D-rings are solid metal clips with no moving parts or springs, they are likely to last for the entire life of the device on which they are used.
