How to Import Animals to Hawaii
- 1). Ensure that your animal is allowed under Hawaii agricultural law. Some animals are prohibited, such as piranhas, snakes and some salamanders. Other animals require permits before being allowed into the state. A full list of both restricted and prohibited animals can be accessed on the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website.
- 2). Obtain permits for animals on the restricted list. Further information for your particular animal can be found by contacting the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.
- 3). Ensure your house pets have proper paperwork for vaccinations, rabies tests, and owner microchips. Rabies documentation must be sent to the Animal Quarantine Branch at least 10 days before arrival. A checklist of other required documentation can be found on the Animal Quarantine Branch's website and pets that pass the checklist will be released from quarantine within five days. Pets that do not pass the checklist's requirements may be held for up to 120 days.
- 4). Transport your animals. House pets can be boarded and flown in through a commercial airline, while larger animals will need to be shipped via freight.
- 5). Clear your animals. Animals that pass inspection and have proper documentation will be released into your custody.
