Develop a Character and Make People Laugh Part 4
So let's develop a character here, and call him "Dr.
Ooze", which is similar in name to a well-known real doctor on TV these days.
Besides, "ooze" is a great medical term.
Dr.
Ooze could come out on stage with his doctor's greens and a stethoscope around his neck.
Then he could give the audience a lesson on how to pronounce medical terms properly.
Examples: Stethoscope should be pronounced "steth-o'- sco-pee' " Dialysis should be pronounced "di'-al-ee'-sis" Thermometer can be pronounced "therm'-o-meter".
You could get the audience to pronounce these words also just so they'll be medically accurate.
There are many medical terms you could play around with, but always put the emphasis on the wrong syllable for laughs.
Use local humour in your sketches.
Example: Don Herron was speaking about the Historical Society one time, but purposely pronounced it the "Hysterical Society".
So twist names around, even for cities by even changing one letter.
Example: Woodstock can be Woodstick, Cornwall can be Cornball, etc.
to give them a different sound.
Even omitting one letter can cause laughter.
I once saw a sign that read, "Canal City", but someone stood in front of the first "C"..
...
and you can deduce the way it looked.
Dr.
Ooze could tell of his experiences with older patients in their "Golden Years".
They're Golden alright, but just for Dr.
Ooze! He could be wearing rubber gloves and put some lubricant on his finger, suggesting he's going to perform a free exam on a volunteer from the audience.
Naturally, everybody would point to the "other guy".
You could tell to your audience a story like this, "Many people ask me how I stay in such great shape, and I tell them.
First, I don't drink, don't smoke, take vitamins daily, exercise, and have sex 3 times a week.
But wait a minute; that's not quite true...
I do have the occasional glass of red wine...
but only for medicinal purposes!" You can choose other professions, too.
Roseanne found it in spoofing a housewife in her sitcom.
There are other examples you may think of, but remember, choose a character that people can relate to, dig for humour in that profession, look for a different way to view that occupation, and wear attire appropriate for that character.
You'll do well by following these simple tips.
