Ivf Success Rates Over 40 - Your Chances Of A Successful Pregancy

Since the first test tube baby was born in 1978, there have been over 3 million live births of IVF babies born across 52 countries. Current reports suggest that there are around 122,000 IVF babies born per year across the USA and Europe out of around 600,000 IVF cycles. As you can see, less than a quarter of cycles result in successful pregnancies.

With regard to IVF success rates over 40, the actual pregnancy rates are lower than 25% for a number of reasons. Of course it cannot be denied that IVF has and continues to help women but the fact is that IVF cannot help everyone. Success is determined by a number of factors including the type of, and reasons for your infertility, the number of cycles you are willing to go through, your lifestyle and your age and the age of your partner.

For women over 40, one recent large study undertaken over a year in the USA indicated that the percentage of cycles resulting in a pregnancy was 18.5% compared to 45.8% for those under 35. In terms of actual live births, the IVF success rates over 40 were 11.7% compared with 39.9% for women under 35.

Out of all the factors which determine IVF success, the most important is maternal age. This is mainly because the quality of a woman's eggs declines as she ages and as a woman reaches her late thirties and early forties, although she may still have an abundance of eggs, they are generally less capable of being fertilized. Even when fertilization occurs, implantation is less successful and miscarriage rates are generally higher due mainly to genetic defects.

IVF success rates over 40 decline sharply once a woman reaches 44, at which time, IVF babies are rarely born using a woman's own eggs.

Looking beyond the figures above which were taken from a year-long study, indications are that the more IVF cycles a woman is prepared to undertake then the higher the success rates, regardless of age. It is interesting to note that up 6 cycles seems to be the optimum, with take-home baby rates declining sharply once this figure has been reached. In terms of IVF success rates over 40 when cumulative figures are analysed, there is around a 20% differential between women below 35 and those over 40.

It is always interesting to look at general figures and percentage success rates for groups of women but what is worthy of note is the fact that regardless of age, a woman's chances of IVF success can be significantly boosted by making a number of lifestyle and dietary changes in the months before egg retrieval.

There is so much that can be done to boost egg quality, which is the main determining factor of IVF success rates over 40 and if you are interested in learning more, please visit my website, improve the success rates of IVF.
