Psychohistory - What Is It?
He began his career in the 1940's and continued through the 1980's, constantly producing masterpiece after masterpiece.
Arguably Isaac Asimov's most popular novels are the Foundation Series, which follow the adventure of Hari Seldon to save the universe from anarchy and destruction.
They are a galactic tale of adventure, mystery and strategy.
In the original novel "Foundation", Isaac Asimov introduces his readers to Hari Seldon an eclectic, genius from the Galactic Empire's Capital, Trantor.
While studying at Trantor, Hari Seldon developed the pseudo-science of Psychohistory and through this new pseudo-science he predicted that the Galactic empire was about to fall and that if nothing was done 30,000 years of anarchy and famine would sweep across the empire.
However, Psychohistory may also have the answer to how humankind will be able to reduce the period of anarchy to a mere 1,000 years.
What is Psychohistory you ask? Basically, Psychohistory has the ability to mathematically predict the outcome of human events that incorporate billions and billions of people.
In mass quantities, human actions are calculable and predictable in the delicate grasp of a psychohistorian.
"With his new science Hari Seldon has put into place a scheme that has predicted the future and he now must try and find a way that will allow his plan to become a reality.
" This is where the Foundation novels begin and they are named such because Seldon has determined that two foundations must be created at opposite ends of the galaxy in order to have a chance at saving the human race thousands of years of destitution and poverty.
As the novels progress, readers are able to see "Seldon's Plan" unfold as the foundationers struggle to fit into a plan that they are not allowed to know.
The pseudo-science relies on probability and randomness to continue to be efficient.
These novels are a masterpiece and as a reader I have come back to them over and over again.
Psychohistory is so interesting and such a great idea.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was any root in truth to this type of statistical probability? Maybe we will find out in the distant future are we stretch across the stars...
