Now that you have bring your blog up, you need to do some management on your site.
One of them is SEO.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization enables crawlers from search engines like Google, Yahoo, Technorati and many others to crawl on your site.
In other words, SEO is done to enable your blog to be discovered and indexed in search engines.
Imagine, yourself as a chef.
With dedication and hard work, you created your first signature dish.
Now, just think of what would happen if your pride is not found in the menu! As bloggers, we don't have to be a master in SEO.
Creating contents is busy enough.
We don't need to delve into the details like algorithms, programming and taxonomy.
However, with basic understanding it would do us a lot of good when we manage our website.
Engaging a SEO consultant involve thousands of dollars and trust me you don't need to pay that money.
Basic SEO is actually all about common sense and simplicity.
As part of our learning in how to blog, learning SEO encompass two aspects.
The first is about how spiders work and the second is on how search engines figure out what documents relate to which keywords and phrases.
Search engines like Google and Yahoo send out electronic 'spiders' to collect data on a particular website.
These spiders pays a visit to your site, and copy its content which are the stored in the search engine's database.
Also known as 'bots', these spiders are designed to trace links from one document to another.
These spiders are hard workers.
They work tirelessly, copying and assimilating contents from one document, record links and follow up in sending other bots to duplicate contents on those linked documents.
By sending out spiders and collecting information in a continuous manner, these major search engines contain large amounts of established databases.
Spiders are designed to read a site's information just like a human do.
They start from the top left hand corner, and would read the content line by line from left to right.
If columns are used, these spiders will read the left hand column until complete, before moving to the central and then right hand column.
If a spider encounters a link it can follow, it will record that link and send another spider to copy and record data found on the document the link leads to.
The spider will follow through the site until everything is thoroughly recorded.
Once the bots have followed the links and have recorded everything in their paths, we can securely assume that if a link to a site exists, the bots will find that site.
We no longer need to submit our sites to the major search engines.
Bear in mind, these bots are perfectly capable electronic beings.
They are capable of finding any sites on their own, provided there is a link to that particular site somewhere in the world wide web.
Both Google and Yahoo have uncanny ability to judge the topic or the themes of the document they are examining.
They would then judge the topical relationship of documents that are linked together.
As a result, the most valuable links come from the sites that preaches on the same topic.
So, forget about getting unrelated links from any site you encounter.
Not only they don't help, if overdone, they may even jeopardize your reputation in the eyes of the search engines.
OK once the bots come to your site, you must welcome them.
One of the best way is to provide these bots with a clear pathway around your website.
You could do this by providing easy to follow text links directed to the most important pages in the site, probably at the bottom of each document.
I have construct a simple site map in this site for your reference.
Providing the bots access to the areas within your site in which you want them to visit is only half the battle won.
Another half of the battle lies in the usage of keywords in your content.
Basically, search engines are supposed to provide their users with lists of documents that relate to their entered keyword phrase or queries.
Google and Yahoo need to determine which of the billions of documents are relevant to a small number of specific words.
To achieve this, the search engine needs to know your site in relationship to those words.
Basically, there are four elements that a search engine would examine when gauging a blog.
First the URL of the site, then followed by the title of the site.
Thirdly, the search engine would examine the description meta tag.
Thus, titles should be written using the strongest keyword targets possible.
I would provide SEO Tips on the next post.
Next is the content.
Your content should focus to the theme of your blog as much as possible.
Bots are efficient but they will get confused if your blog covers multiple topics on each page.
Forget about the bots, even your readers would be perplexed.
Please remember, SEO is all about making your site visible, easy to follow, easy to read and understandable to the spiders and the readers.
SEO is a never ending action but it gets easier as you progress.
In the end, if you do the SEO right, all your effort will pay off.
