In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the area around Walzem Rd. began to fall apart, prompting Windcrest to form the Windcrest Economic Development Corporation.

There are approximately 20 restaurants in Windcrest, the majority of which are big chain restaurants like Taco Cabana or Red Lobster. There are a few ethnic restaurants for Thai or Vietnamese food but if you are looking for a great dining experience, you may want to try nearby Castle Hills.

There are dozens of businesses in Windcrest, and the official city site does an excellent job of listing all of them. Of course, the biggest attraction of the year is the Light Up which has been a Windcrest tradition for over 50 years. Entire blocks of houses participate in lighting up their houses, often with a theme. The area surrounding Windcrest at night is often heavy with traffic from those who come to see the huge and creative displays.
