- 1). Plant the begonia in fertile soil if you are planting a new plant. Add organic compost to the garden soil and till it in with a shovel before planting begonia. If you are potting the begonia, use equal parts peat and compost as the potting medium.
- 2). Keep the plant in partial shade, which means it should get no more than four to six hours of direct sunlight daily. For already established begonias, install a shade screen or plant shade trees around it.
- 3). Allow the soil or potting medium to become dry between waterings. For potted plants, water until the liquid comes out of the drainage holes. If your begonias are in the ground, water until the soil settles. Do not let potted begonias sit in water, or the roots may rot.
- 4). Apply a general purpose fertilizer to the soil at the beginning of the growing season according to package directions.
- 5). Use sharp scissors to deadhead fading blossoms as they become spent. Cut off any yellowing or wilting leaves during the summer.
