Photoshop can be a bear to tame...
but it doesn't have to be! Photographers all across the country are choosing their weapons in the fight to learn all the tips and tricks to this mastering this photo editing software.
The recent release of Photoshop CS5 has fueled a fury of information to arm the masses who set out to conquer the new beast.
To help guide you through the battlefield, let's take a look at the weapons of choice:
  • Photoshop Video Tutorials Online
  • Photoshop Video Tutorials on DVD
  • Photoshop Printed Books and Manuals
Let's take a look at the pros and cons of each.
Photoshop video tutorials online come in two forms, free and paid.
You can go to YouTube and search 'Photoshop tutorials" to find a wide range of free tips and tricks.
These are often homemade screen capture videos.
Consequently, the quality of the information and its presentation vary widely.
But you can get some good, 'over-the-shoulder style' tips that will help you.
There are also 'gurus' of all skill levels who sell downloadable video tutorials.
These can be a bit tricky to rate as to the value they bring.
Anyone can make a video now and put it out there.
I'd want to see some pretty good previews before spending my hard-earned dollars on these unknown resources.
For a more professional approach, good quality videos are available from Adobe trained Photoshop professionals on DVD.
These will be high-quality DVDs showing some of the most amazing features of Photoshop and how to use them efficiently.
Unfortunately, the DVDs can often cost as much as the Photoshop software! But they are a good choice if you are brand-new to Photoshop or you prefer to watch only the highest-quality videos.
Finally, printed manuals have been around forever.
They are the tried and true warriors against ignorance.
Affordable.
Always at the ready.
Information at your fingertips, anytime day or night.
Printed instruction materials come in all shapes and sizes, from large, several hundred page reference books all the way down to the most basic instructions in streamlined 'crib note' form like tip cards.
PDF files are also available online which I classify as printed here.
Printed instruction prices vary widely, but with most priced less than $40, present a great value next to the far more expensive DVDs.
Printed materials are great for intermediate users and pros who just need a quick lesson or reference.
For those brand new to Photoshop and on a budget, I would recommend using inexpensive print references along with the free videos.
However you choose to tame the Photoshop beast, know that it can be done! Many have found success before you and marked the way.
Do not fear it...
with a bit of help, you too can be the master.
