Instructions for Using an Incident Light Meter With Flash
- Make sure you have the appropriate film speed selected on the light meter's ISO dial. To take an incident light reading, place the light meter in the same light as the subject, rather than pointing the meter toward the subject. You will also need to set off the flash at the moment you take the reading. A cable release flash is ideal because it allows you to trigger the flash from anywhere in your studio. If you do not have a cable release, you will need an assistant to trigger the flash while you take your light reading. Note the aperture and shutter speed settings on the meter's display screen when you take the reading.
- If you want to use a particular shutter speed or aperture, you can adjust the strength of your strobe or flash up or down to accommodate that need. Adjust the light up or down until the meter shows that the exposure you want to make is appropriate for the amount of light. Be careful not to burn your hand on the strobe lights; they can get very hot.
