How to Shoot With Flash Turned Off on the Camera
- 1). Turn on your camera, press the "Menu" button, then toggle through the menu screens until you see the symbol for flash photography. Press the set button and switch the flash from "On" to "Off." Press the shutter release button part way to return the camera to shooting mode.
- 2). Set the camera's white balance to match the light you will be shooting in. This is one of the biggest advantages to digital photography. Different light has different temperatures and, as such, will look different if the camera is not set to the proper setting. Press the "WB" button on your camera and toggle to the correct setting, then press "Set" to lock in your selection. If your camera can record images in "RAW" format, this is the best way to shoot in low light. Shooting RAW will allow you to tweak the white balance in post production.
- 3). Increase the camera's ISO. This is a great advantage of digital cameras. By increasing the camera's sensitivity to light, you can shoot at a higher shutter speed that will lessen the likelihood of motion blur caused by camera shake.
- 4). Hold your camera with two hands, and, if possible, use the viewfinder as opposed to a digital screen to compose your picture. Holding the camera to your eye gives you the opportunity to keep your arms close to your body for increased stability. If your shutter speed is too low and you are unsure if you can hold your hands still, lean against a wall for added stability, or, if possible, mount your camera to a tripod.
- 5). Compose and shoot the picture by pressing the shutter release all the way down.
