Rue Plant Care

104 139

    Location

    • A native of southern Europe and northern Africa, rue does best in hot, dry sites in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 to 9. Some cultivars may grow in USDA zones 10 and 11.

    Soil

    • The plant is tolerant of a range of soils, although it prefers a poor, sandy soil that drains well. Rue is quite drought tolerant once established, although new plants should be watered on a regular basis.

    Propagation

    • Rue may be raised from cuttings taken in late summer or autumn. Seeds may be started in spring, taking about two weeks to germinate. Rue will usually self sow. If planting multiple plants, give each plant about 18 inches of space.
