    • According to the American Council on Exercise's 2010 Fitness Professional Survey, the average annual income for full-time personal trainers in the United States is $42,204, or $21.42 per hour. The same survey indicates that part-time personal trainers earn $18,648, or $24.57 per hour in 2010. Personal training jobs are the most popular among fitness professional jobs, with group fitness instructor and fitness director in second and third place.

    Certification

    • Depending on your clientele's needs and the preferences of the fitness center, you may choose among the respected personal trainer certification programs. The National Academy of Sports Medicine took a survey of the job listings asking for NASM, ACE, and NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) certifications. The average salary offered in job descriptions for all three of these positions were within $2,000 of each other, ranging from $42,000 to $44,000, as of February 2010.

    Education

    • Education has a direct impact on the income of a personal trainer. Full-time personal trainers with a high school diploma earn $45,516 per year, while those with a master's degree earn $67,287 as of 2010. Those with advanced certifications have an even higher rate of pay. A personal trainer with a master's degree and an advanced certification from the ACE earns an average of $78,382 annually.

    Considerations

    • According to the BLS, the outlook is good for fitness professional occupations. The BLS predicts 29 percent growth in fitness professional jobs between 2008 and 2018. To advance as a personal trainer, you must keep your certifications updated and continue to seek out further education to update your skills and keep current with the needs of clients.
