Creating a Homemade Belly Cast for a Pregnant Moms to Be
Making your own homemade belly cast really is a very simple thing to do. All you need apart from a Mom to be (and at about 35 to 36 weeks pregnant is best) is one very enthusiastic and willing helper and a belly casting kit. So, with a few hints and tips I can show you how to do your own.
You can buy everything separately to make your homemade belly cast but having the belly casting kit means that you have everything without having to think about what you need which has to be a much better idea.
Anyway, first things first, it is all in the preparation and planning so, make sure that Mom to be has been to the bathroom before you start as she is going to be sat for about 45 minutes to an hour once you start.
Also, it is a really good idea to make sure that she puts on some old underwear that it will not matter if it gets ruined (best to be safe here) as a fair amount of petroleum jelly, water and plaster are involved during the casting.
Spread plenty of newspaper or an old tarp (if you have one) on the floor where you will be working as you do not want water etc to ruin your flooring. Then get a chair, cover that with an old sheet or towel to stop Mom from sticking to it and protect the chair at the same time.
Place the chair in the middle of your covered floor and then with Mom sat on the edge of the chair (in her old underwear remember) put plenty of petroleum jelly or cocoa butter, depending on which you are using (and it really makes no difference to the finished result) over the areas that you are going to be casting followed by a layer of cling film. This stops the plaster sticking to Mom as it hardens off and makes it easier to remove too.
Then, the fun bit; dipping your pre plastered gauze into the water and then working as methodically and quickly as you can patting gently and smoothing as you go until you have 3 overlapping layers. Pay special attention to the belly button and nipples covering those areas with smaller squares of the plastered gauze, this actually helps preserve a better shape and will give you a really great finish.
This is not an exact science but, the neater you can be the less you will have to rub down when you have finished. That said I appreciate that not everyone is an artist or sculpture so it really does not matter too much, the emphasis is on fun and getting the awesome pregnant belly shape (neatly or otherwise).
After 35 to 45 minutes the plaster should have hardened off enough for you to remove it gently and carefully and then be left to dry for about 48 hours, after which you can rub it down, prime it and finally decorate as you wish.
So, you can see it is pretty simple to do a homemade belly cast and have fun whilst capturing that magical time really easily.
