How to Choose a Hypnotherapist

    • 1). Figure out what type of hypnotherapist you want to see. Some hypnotherapists practice no other types of therapy or medicine. You can also see a mental health practitioner or medical doctor who includes hypnotherapy in their practice.

    • 2). Check with your medical insurance company. Your insurance provider can often give you a list of hypnotherapists or doctors who practice hypnotherapy in your area that are at least partially covered. This can help the decision process.

    • 3). Get credentials from any hypnotherapist you want to see. Check medical backgrounds of mental health practitioners and medical doctors, including where they studied and what they're specialties are. Ensure hypnotherapists who don't practice anything else are certified in hypnotherapy by an accredited organization, such as the National Guild of Hypnotists. To become certified, an organization should require at least 100 hours of training.

    • 4). Make sure you're comfortable working with the hypnotherapist you choose. Hypnotherapy can be a very intimate experience, and to receive optimal benefits, you need to feel comfortable with the therapist. Ask about setting up a quick interview before you schedule an appointment.
