Bookbinding Tutorial - Simplest of Japanese Bookbinding Techniques
Some of them are Yotsume toji,Kangxi, Asa-no-ha toji and Kikko toji.
In this article I will give the steps to create Yotsume toji binding.
This word in English means "Four Holes".
It is very simple and if you have any book whose pages are falling out or you just want to make your own simple book this method can be used.
You will need
- An awl or a sharp object to make holes
- Bookbinding needle
- Thread ( carpet or nylon or other strong bookbinding thread )
- Paper clamps
- A Ruler
Keep the points at 1/4 inch from the spine.
The points near the edges should also be 1/4 inches away.
2) Clamp the pages near the spine tightly and make holes through the marked points.
3) Start sewing from second point.
First make a knot on this point and then run the needle into the adjacent point ( not the one near edge ).
So the thread is through the two middle points.
Again pass the needle through this third point.
4) Now get the needle through the fourth point.
Pass the needle two times through the fourth point ( one covering the spine and the other covering the edge ) 5) From here go to the third, then second and finally in the first.
Similar to the fourth point make two rounds of thread on the first point ( one covering the spine and the other covering the edge ) 6) In the last step go to the second point from which you started and make a knot.
The knot will be formed on the upper side.
Get the needle down the same point and make it tight.
Now cut the left over thread.
This is one of the simplest Japanese Bookbinding Techniques that you can do in no time.
The only thing you have to take care are the holes.
If you make them accurately then the sewing is easy.
You can start it now itself.
