Any water fowler hunter must possess the required license and a personal identification certificate. Permit requirements like the Annual Public Hunting Permit or Daily hunting permit are to be possessed. Special documents are required in case of shipping or giving the bird as gift or donation.

Guns known as 12 gauge shotguns are used in duck hunting. They are usually numbered in a descending order beginning with 5 and ending at 1. These are normally used for ducks. For larger shots such as geese, B,BBB,BB and T shot are used. However in many areas, buckshots and larger shots are illegal and cannot be used on migratory birds.

Using a rifle is considered illegal and prohibited due to a number of reasons. There is the potential danger of having long-range bullets lobbing in the air, the unfair advantage of any hunter to hunt at distant ranges and the possibility of endangering hidden hunters on the opposite side. Also toxic substances like lead etc should not be used for shots while steel, bismuth, copper, etc can be used, High caution is to be maintained to avoid careless or accidental mishap. Also the hunter should always be sure of the target and not assume a sure hit. Also the direction of shot should be planned due to constraints as people, buildings etc. It is good to keep the finger off the trigger until the shot is determined to avoid accidental firing of the gun. This will not only scare the ducks but may also make an accidental hit on anyone in the vicinity, even self.

Governments have rules on the seasons on when to permit duck hunting and when not to. This is to prevent mass killing of these birds that may result in extinction.

Hunting dogs are a good companion for retrieving the shot duck. The animals have to be trained for this purpose. Usually, golden retrievers and Labradors are good choices. The acute sense of smell of the dog enables them to find the wounded birds easily. Wastage can be prevented by means of a dog and a higher percentage of birds that are shot up can be ensured.

There are rules on how many hits or bag limits are allowed per day. The failure to follow the rules might result in necessary consequences.

Duck calls are whistle like instruments that produced mimicked versions of the real duck calls. Using this appropriately helps in bringing in more of ducks to the hunting area.

Hunting can be a very cold sport and the hunter must be well insulated from the cold. Waterproof pants (usually made of a material similar to neoprene) known as waders have attached boots and are used in this sport. Most waders are as high as the chest, but waders that are waist and knee high are used in waters that are shallow. Thus the gear to be possessed when duck hunting are to be well maintained and used appropriately for the safety of one and all.
