What is Keyword Density and How it Affects You

Keyword density is a measure of how many times a selected keyword can be found in an article.
The calculation is expressed as a percentage of the keyword to the total words.
It is a measure of how relevant a web page, blog post, or article is to the keyword in question.
For example, take a typical 500 word article.
Now let's say you mention "keyword" a total of 20 times throughout the article.
That would give you a keyword density of 20 divided by 500 which equals 0.
04.
Expressed as a percentage, the keyword density of the article would be 4%.
Please note that any HTML code will not be included in the calculation.
It is important to keep your keyword density around three to five percent.
Too high and not only will it become unreadable, but your blog post will get marked as spam.
Too low and you wont be able to rank very well against your competition.
By keeping your total density near this accepted standard, you can be ensured that you will get ranked in the SERPs and your article will still be coherent.
Follow these general steps in order to determine the keyword density: 1.
Copy the content from your article and paste it into any word processor (MS-Word, Google Docs, etc..
).
2.
Under the 'Edit' menu, choose 'Select All'.
Proceed to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Word Count'.
Remember this number (or write it down).
3.
Return to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Find'.
Next, find the 'Replace' tab and enter your chosen keyword.
Be sure that you are replacing the word with itself - we are only trying to figure out how many time this word occurs in our blog post.
4.
Once the processor is finished replacing the words, it should provide a count a total number of replaced words.
This number represents the total number of times that your keyword appears in the article.
5.
The final step.
Take the number from step 4 and divide it by the number found in step 2.
This percentage is your keyword density.
An alternate (and much easier) way to determine your keyword density is through the FireFox plug-in SearchStatus.
This plug-in comes with a built in density finder.
It's easy to use too.
On any page, right click the SS logo and select "Show Keyword Density".
A popup will prompt you to enter the chosen word.
Once entered, you will be presented with the keyword report.
This report will give you a lot of additional information, on top of the basic density numbers.
Now that you have a better understanding of the concept of keyword density, be sure to keep it in mind during your next blog post.
By following the accepted standard and always keeping your researched blog keywords in mind, you can ensure the best possible rankings in the search engines.
