    • 1). Turn on Bluetooth on each device. Computers typically have either an external button or a software program that controls the Bluetooth device. Search for "Bluetooth" in the "Finder" on Mac or the "Start Menu" search in Windows. Phones and PDAs have a "Connections" or "Connectivity" menu generally located in the "Tools" or "Settings" menus.

    • 2). Make one of the devices "Discoverable." This can be achieved from the "Options" menu of the Bluetooth control screen used to enable Bluetooth during step 1. Select the option to make the device discoverable and click OK to allow other devices to detect its presence. In cases where one of the devices is a computer, perform this step on the other device. If both devices are computers, this step can be skipped.

    • 3). Pair the devices. Choose "Add Device" or "Search for Devices" in the options menu of the Bluetooth control screen of the device that was not set to "Discoverable" in the previous step. In the case of pairing two computers, this step may be performed on either machine.

    • 4). Select the correct device from the list of devices in range and click "OK" or double-click on the correct icon if using a computer.

    • 5). Enter a passkey in the dialogue box to complete the pairing of the two devices. The passkey is used as a security measure for connection attempts. It can be any four numbers, but must be the same for each device, for example, 0000.

    • 6). Select the files that need to be transferred. Mobile phone and PDA users will navigate to their file storage folder and highlight the target file. Laptop users will browse to the folder that contains the file or files on their hard drive.

    • 7). Transfer the files from one device to the other. Mobile phone and PDA users press the "Options" key with the target file selected and choose the option to "Transfer using Bluetooth" or similar. Computer users may right-click on the selected file or files and choose "Send to," "Bluetooth" and the name of the destination device.

    • 8). Accept the proposed transfer on the destination device. A notification message will appear on the destination device indicating that a file transfer has been initiated. Click to accept the transfer and choose where to save the file or files if given the option to do so.
