How to Trim Junipers in Shapes

    • 1). Trim your juniper to a height of about 8 inches after planting with a sharp pruning clipper. This will stimulate a multistemmed plant that responds well to trimming into shapes.

    • 2). Trim the juniper at the end of the first growing season by pruning off one-half of the new growth to stimulate strong and multistemmed growth low in the plant. Repeat this pruning at the end of the second growing season.

    • 3). Trim the juniper during the third growing season by creating the desired shape you want for the shrub. Use a sharp pruning clipper and take small amounts of branch growth at a time to prevent cutting off too much.

    • 4). Create a large cardboard template of the desired shape and hold it up to the juniper while making branch cuts. This is helpful when trimming more than one juniper into the same shape to keep the shrubs similar in size.

    • 5). Trim the juniper shape each year to maintain the desired look by removing growth sprouts along the outside edges. Avoid letting the shrub overgrow between trimmings.
