Learning to be a better guard is no easy thing, but it is a sure way to becoming a better basketball player. Doing frequent basketball drills for guards can help you become the better player. For those who are still starting out in the game, the guard position is a very difficult position to fill. As a guard, you hold the teams chances of victory on your hands. You also keep the team together since guards are usually the leaders of every basketball club.

A guard functions not only to be a proficient outside shooter. They also need to be great ball handlers so they can advance the ball, make assists, defend it, or bypass defenders. That is why ball handling drills for guards is a great way to become a better basketball player. Lets look at 3 of my favourite ball handling drills you can use to optimize your dribbling prowess that can help your team win games.

1.)Figure 8 Dribble

This is probably the most common, most used, and also one of the most effective basketball drills for guards. This enhances your dribbling capability using your fingers (never your palms), ability to dribble fast, and control, which guarantees to help you become a better basketball player.

You need to spread your legs wide. Youll know its enough when they are wider than your shoulders. Next, bend from your waist then dribble the ball low and fast with your right hand. Slowly bring the ball over between your legs, and then use your left hand to take away the ball from the right and continue the dribbling. Slowly bring it over the left side of your body, then to the front, and then back between your legs so your right hand can get back the ball and repeat the process. Remember: Never use your palms in dribble, only your fingers.

2.)4-Step Dribble

For this drill, you need to stand on one end of the court with a ball. You are going to take 4 steps toward the center. However, you need to perform one basketball dribbling move for every step you take. After the four steps, you will have completed four dribbling moves. So for example, when you start you perform a stutter step, then a crossover, followed by a spin move, then finally a behind the back dribble. This helps improve how natural it is for you to combine dribbling moves on the court when faced with defenders.

3.)The 5-minute Circle

This is one of the best ball handling basketball drills for guards that can help you become a better basketball player.

To do it, all you need to do is stand on the middle of a circle with a ball. You can choose either one of the free throw circles or the half-court circle. Then, start the time and dribble all your heart out using and combining all the dribbling moves you have learned so far, such as the hesitation, inside-out, crossover, spin move, behind the back, between the legs, or the stutter crossover. Do this for 5 minutes straight and it will help you get a better feel of using and combining different moves.

With these, you are guaranteed to become the better player. Just make sure to use these drills for guards with your usual routine and you should be winning games for your team in no time.
