Not so long ago, there was a time when Christmas involved no gift giving at all and in some countries that is still the standard.
Lie many old customs gift exchange was difficult to abolish even as Christianity spread.
Early church leaders tried to outlaw the custom, but the people cherished the idea of giving gifts at Christmas.
Though the roots of giving presents at Christmas extends to ancient times, the tradition of gift giving, that we are so familiar with today, goes back to Victorian England.
Friendliness and charity filled the hearts during the holiday season...

The American Christmas was influenced by the Victorians.
The concept of Santa Claus, the association with gifts was a natural and soon, Santa became responsible for the presents left in an ever increasing number of stockings.
Some people wonder if the emphasis on buying, shopping and getting brings more happiness or disappointment to those who can afford very little.
Most parents are willing to do away entirely with what might be called the "gimme" holiday.
That is no reason that the spirit of Christmas or Hanakah, or Kwanza, or Eid al Fitr or Diwali can not be incorporated into our modern world.
