    • 1). Wet your horse all over with the garden hose. Do this in a safe, enclosed area to prevent the horse from getting too far away from you. Stay near your horse with clicker in hand and treats at the ready.

    • 2). Wait for your horse to choose to lay down on his own. A wet horse will naturally want to lay down and roll. The key to training your horse to lay down on command lies in teaching him to associate the command with the action. You have to catch the horse in the act and name that action for him.

    • 3). Click the clicker and reward your horse with a treat and say in a positive tone of voice, "Good lay down!" as soon as he lays down. Most likely, as soon as he hears the clicker, he will jump to his feet startled.

    • 4). Wait for you horse to choose to lay down on his own again.

    • 5). Click the clicker and reward your horse with another treat and say, "Good lay down!" as soon as he lays down again.

    • 6). Repeat this cycle a number of times until it is clear that he is associating the command with the action. You will know this is happening if you tell him to lay down and he does so.
