Do you have a golden retriever? How much do you know about it aside from for the fact that it's a fun filled family dog? There is actually an official definition of a golden retriever. There is the AKC or American kennel club, the CKC or Canadian kennel club, the UKC, the ANKC and a host of others.

Origin

Golden Retrievers were actually originally called a golden flat coat. They came from a cross between a yellow retriever which is the flat coated retriever and the now extinct Tweed water spaniel. Further in the revolution they were mixed with Irish setters and bloodhounds. They originally hailed from the North of Scotland and were bred as a hunting dog or gun dog retriever.

Watchdog

Golden retrievers don't make a very good attack dog. They will however generally barked loudly when a stranger approaches. But they're not a dog that you're going to be of the train to attack. Generally speaking as a family dog this is probably not something that you want anyway.

Registration Group

As you might imagine, they are part of the AKC sporting group or gun dog group. Generally the dogs in this group are very physical in nature and require a lot of exercise. The Golden fits perfectly with this definition.

Home

As long as this dog is lots of exercise they will dwell in an apartment. However it's important to note that the required both a lot of companionship with humans and a lot of exercise. As long as this is provided they will be happy and won't do anything silly. However, I feel it's best they live in the home with a backyard in a park nearby. This is the best way to house a golden retriever.

Health

The main diseases that can affect the Golden tend to be eye problems, CHD, and cancer. They can also have heart problems and skin allergies things of this nature. Some of these problems can be screened for at the breeding stage. For example, your veterinarian can x-ray your breeding stock to see if any of these genetic defects are being passed on.

Temperament

While they certainly are an easy-going and well mannered dog, they do require an owner that can display strong leadership. If this is not the case they do tend to become somewhat strange or silly in their behavior. They may be prone to barking and excessive chewing and things of this nature. They need a great deal of mental and physical exercise to keep them calm and well balanced.

General Qualities

the Golden retriever breed tends to be about 61 cm high for a male and no more than about 56 cm for a female. On the weight side the females tend to be about 32 kg at their maximum and males about 36.

Occupation

Goldens have many talents that can be put to work. They make great drug detection dogs, they learn competitive obedience very well, they love to swim, they're in fantastic hunting dog, and also a great tracking dog. In addition, they are often used as search and rescue dogs in general service dogs.

Grooming

This dog needs a lot of grooming. This is due to the fact that they have and undercoat that is dense. Their hair is lovely and smooth and it's easy to groom but you need a firm bristle brush and be and need to be prepared to do it twice per week.
