How to Unclog a Toilet With Dishsoap
- 1). Fill a large pot with water, and place it on the stove. While the water is heating up, find some liquid (not powder detergent) dish soap.
- 2). Pour or squirt about a half cup of dish soap into your toilet. The exact amount is not important. Let the dish soap settle for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
- 3). Check on your pot of water while the dish soap is settling. Hot water will help break up the clog; however, never pour boiling water into a toilet. Boiling water may crack the bowl. When your water is hot, pour it quickly into your toilet. Pouring the water quickly will help suck the water through the exit hole more effectively.
- 4). Use your plunger if the clog is not resolved right away. Use a funnel-cup plunger for best results. Funnel-cup plungers have an extra piece of material, called a flange, around the bottom of the cup. You may want to run your plunger under some hot water before using it to soften the rubber for a better seal.
- 5). Seal your plunger over the exit hole completely. A good seal is important for best results. Push downwards and up a few times (retaining the seal), and pull the plunger back up swiftly. For most clogs, using dish soap, hot water and a plunger will solve the problem. If the problem is not resolved right away, you may need to use more hot water, dish soap and your plunger again.
