    • 1). Place the offensive lineup for each team in the left column of the scoresheet. When filling out score sheets you will list the starting lineup for the visiting team on the left side, and home team on the right side. Write the player's last name, uniform number and position in the space provided.

    • 2). Assign a number to each player based on his defensive position on the baseball diamond. Each position has a corresponding number. They are pitcher, 1; catcher, 2; first base, 3; second base, 4; third base, 5; shortstop, 6; left field, 7; center field, 8; and right field, 9. Use these numbers on the score sheet to denote who was involved a play. A ground ball out between the pitcher and first baseman will be notated as 1-3. A double play between the shortstop, second and first baseman will be notated as 6-4-3.

    • 3). Record actions in a baseball game with the offensive markings associated with score sheets. A "1B" signifies a single, a "2B" signifies a double, a "3B" signifies a triple and a "HR" signifies that a player hit a home run. An "E" with a defensive number next to it means the offensive player reached on an error by the player at that numerical position. A "BB" means the player walked. A "HBP" means the player was hit by a pitch. A "PB" means a passed ball was credited to the catcher. A "WP" means the pitcher threw a wild pitch. A "K" means that the batter struck out swinging. A backwards "K" means that the batter struck out without swinging at the third strike.

    • 4). Chart each at-bat pitch by pitch. Score sheets have five little boxes down in one of the corners. Three spaces for a ball, and two places for a strike. As the at-bat occurs, fill in one box for each ball or strike. If the the player fouls off a pitch with two strikes, no additional notation is needed.

    • 5). Notate how the player was retired or reached base. Draw a straight line to show that the player hit a line drive, a curved line for a fly ball and a squiggly line for a ground ball. For example, if a player flew out to right field, you would draw a curved line toward right field with the number 9 next to it to show that the right fielder caught a fly out. If that same player hit a line drive single to right field, you would draw a straight line toward right field with "1B" next to it.

    • 6). Advance the runners on the score sheet. When a player reaches first base, draw a line from home plate to first along the diamond on the score sheet. If that same player scores, you would fill in the entire diamond.

    • 7). Add other symbols on the score sheet. If a player steals a base, draw a line from the previous base, to the new base he is occupying with an "S" or "SB" next to it. A fielder's choice occurs when the defense chooses to get one player out instead of another. This is signified with an "FC."

    • 8). Record any substitutions by drawing a line through the name of the player who was removed and writing the name of the new player below. Also, draw a vertical line in the corresponding player box to signify which inning the replacement occurred.
