All it really takes for someone to learn if the word or phrase is a profitable one is some PPC. That's right, PPC. This is one of the best un-talked about strategies that I know about for doing any sort of keyword research.
What you do is this. You go out there and do your normal research. Find out how many searches there is every month for the phrase you are after. Look up to see what kind of competition there is. See if the competition has done any SEO on their sites. And anything else that you feel you might want to know about before creating your content.
What I do then is I go out there and I create a quick landing page designed around the word or phrase that I am going after. I set up a PPC campaign for the phrase in both Google and in Yahoo. I then go and through $20 or $30 at the ad.
By the time that I have gotten that amount of clicks, I would know exactly how many times the ad was shown on both search engines and if I wrote a good ad, I would see what kind of results I would be looking at.
This right here shows you for a mere $20 or so, exactly what kind of people you have looking up the keyword. Did they buy or did they become a lead? You know exactly what that phrase is really worth.
Then you can make a truly informed decision as to if this keyword is a good keyword to do SEO on or if it's not such a good idea. Either way, for $20, that is a pretty cheap test to find out that kind of information.
