Northern Italy is marked off from mainland Europe by the Alps.

Note the area on the western side of northern Italy labeled Etruria. This is where the Etruscans lived. Also note the area to the north of Etruria labeled Cispada[]e which is also called Cisalpine Gaul and was the homeland of the great Roman poet Virgil (Vergil). Cisalpine Gaul referred to the area of Gaul on the Romans' side of the Alps. Transalpine or Transpadane on this map refers to the area on the other side of the River Po.
