The Best Camping in East Texas
Texas has some great places to camp.
Being originally from the Pacific Northwest, I love east Texas because its covered with pine trees.
When I think of the pineywoods of east Texas, I think of rolling hills, great fishing lakes, beautiful pine trees and relaxing by a roaring campfire.
There are over 70 state parks in Texas, so there are many great campgrounds to choose from.
Here are some of the best camping parks in east Texas, and these ones are definitely worth checking out.
Tyler State Park - A 985 acre state park just north of Tyler.
The park includes a 64 acre lake, and offers a wide range of fun things to do.
Activities include camping, boating, fishing, swimming, mountain biking and hiking.
Boat rentals are available at this park, but boating is mainly for fishing or touring the lake, and not water skiing.
Seasonal boat rentals include canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and jon boats.
Tyler State Park has some great camping facilities.
There are over 140 campsites to choose from.
Facilities include restrooms with and without showers, picnic areas, tent and trailer campsites and sites with water or both water and electricity.
They have both pull-through and back-in campsites, along with screened shelters and offer many other amenities.
Lake Bob Sandlin State Park - This is a 639 acre park located southeast of Mount Pleasant.
The park is located along the heavily-wooded shoreline of Lake Bob Sandlin.
This is a 9400-acre lake well known for great fishing.
Be ready to catch your limit of largemouth bass, catfish or crappie.
During the winter it is not uncommon to spot Eagles at this state park.
There are approximately 90 campsites at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park.
Facilities include restrooms with showers, lakeside campsites with water and electricity.
There are also two primitive camping areas.
Other facilities include screened in shelters, and limited use cabins.
This park has over 5 miles of hiking and biking trails, a playground, and a lighted fishing pier.
The next two parks are not as well known, but definitely worth checking out.
Daingerfield State Park - This state park is approximately 506 acres and is located southwest of Texarkana.
The park includes an 80-acre lake and offers picnicking, swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, and boating (5 MPH speed limit).
Pedal boats and canoes are available to rent between March and October.
In addition to pine trees there are many oak, maple and sweetgum trees that provide dazzling fall colors.
Facilities at this park include restrooms with and without showers, approximately 50 tent and trailer campsites, and sites with water or both water and electricity.
Located in the park is Bass Lodge, a group lodge with a capacity of 20 people.
There is also a playground, 2.
5 miles of hiking trails, and cabins for rent.
Atlanta State Park - A 1475 acre state park located a few miles southwest of Texarkana on Wright Patman Lake.
This lake has 170 miles of shoreline and covers 20,300 acres.
Relax and hike along the shoreline and enjoy the beautiful scenery at this park.
Both fishing and bicycling are very popular here.
Facilities include over 50 campsites and restrooms with and without showers.
The park has both pull-through and back-in campsites to accommodate both tent, trailers and RVs.
The park has a playground, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and sand volleyball courts.
All of these parks are just 2-3 hours from Dallas/Ft.
Worth and are well worth a visit.
