Outdoor Fire Pit Rules
- Children younger than 18 years old should always have responsible adult supervision when building a campfire.
- Inquire before you leave to go camping whether fires are allowed. Some wilderness areas and protected wildlife habitats don't allow them. In addition, some campsites that would normally allow fires might prohibit them during exceptionally dry weather. Always check with the park ranger or land owner before starting a campfire.
- Always use a preexisting fire pit where one is available. Many developed campsites will have dedicated metal or stone fire circles. This will help minimize your impact on the environment.
- Clear all brush, leaves and other potentially flammable materials within a 10-foot circle of your fire pit. Make sure there are no overhanging branches that might catch fire from burning embers.
- Gather your materials before you light your fire. Have a bucket of water or garden hose close by in case the fire gets out of hand. Never circumstances leave a lit fire unattended.
- Douse the coals with water until they are completely out, meaning cool enough to touch. Stir the coals to ensure you haven't missed any hot spots.
