High school education

• Sound engineers need a good technical and mechanical foundation. High school courses in computers and electronics are extremely helpful toward achieving that end. Physics courses also offer knowledge of basic concepts that apply to sound engineering, such as electric currents and sound waves. High schools with theaters and auditoriums may also provide opportunities for students to work with sound and light equipment.
  
  

Post-secondary education

• A degree may not always be necessary, but many students will find that some post-secondary education will help land a sound-engineering job. Community colleges and vocational and technical schools offer programs in broadcasting and sound engineering. Programs commonly lead to a certificate of completion or an associate's degree. There are also bachelor's-degree programs. In addition, some recording studios offer training classes.
