Child Nutrition And The Role Of School Cafeteria

Most parents try their best to provide their kids with enough nutrition through the food they bring to school; there is no guarantee that they will finish whatever was prepared for them. Some children are carried away with playing or with whatever they have to do to be interested enough in finishing their meals. Preschoolers or kids below the age of three mostly eat homemade foods. Thus young kids nutrition greatly depends upon the parents, and particularly upon their moms.

The control over their food intake initially lies with the mother or the families. By the time they grow up, the food the school cafeteria provides is a great factor that affects the child nutrition. Since children spend most of their time at school, most school canteens and cafeterias are of the opinion that junk foods must be out of the menu.

Children need nutritious foods to grow and to function. Many adolescents skip breakfast by choice either because they do not have the time to eat or in order to lose weight. In addition, many school-aged children depend on junk foods for their nourishment. Studies on Indian adolescents show that, in general, they have inadequate intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Such children fulfill more than one third of their daily intake from the snacks that they take between meals. These foods generally contain high portion of calories that harm their appetite and at the same time causes obesity in young kids. Cheeseburgers and potato chips are high in their calorie and thus may become the cause of some heart problems also. Many schools provide mid day meals to the students.

There is no harm in providing healthy diets to the students, but there should also be restrictions in the cafeteria food consumption among kids. Many schools negotiate with the food and beverage companies and allow them to sell their foods and beverages inside the school cafeteria. The schools also generate a good portion of revenue from this sale. Thus some of the common items that student can easily get in the school cafeteria are pizza, burger, chips, soda, candy and ice cream. These are such food that can water in anyones mouth and kids are not an exception.

Keeping this situation in mind, many schools in our country are prohibiting junk and fast foods in their school cafeteria. Almost every school has a dietician who keenly observes the food items provided to the children in the school cafeteria. Foods help us to build a healthy body, it is therefore important to encourage children, teenagers, and adults to adopt a physically active lifestyle and healthful eating habits, and to try to motivate young people to become healthier individuals. In addition, a public policy can be framed in the interest of such children to limit the sale of junk foods in schools. Moreover, the teachers and school administrators should also keep an eye on the eating habits of the students so that a healthy life can be ensured to all of them.
