Long Distance Relationships - Do They Work?
When you consider a long distance relationship though, what is considered "long?" Across the city? The state? The country? How about across the world.
My girlfriend did a study abroad program our sophomore years of college.
I had a commitment to playing a varsity sport, so there was no way I could take the time off to go abroad.
Like anyone, I had a serious doubt this was going to work for a whole semester, but I agreed to it and moved on.
Thanks to technological advances, keeping in contact and actually seeing each other every day was fairly easy.
We texted, called and even used Skype to video conference.
However, we made sure we didn't spend our entire lives doing this either.
Anyway, after the semester was over it seemed like nothing.
Long distance relationships are really rather easy to pull off in this day and age.
Now, this was only about 4 months of total away time, not years, but still.
My main advice to anyone trying to keep a solid relationship with someone while they are away is to make sure they are still involved in your life, even if that means looking a little corny by staring into a computer screen.
I found Skype really helped us because we could look at each other instead of faceless chats.
As long as you can see the one you love, you know how they feel and can be much more honest with each other.
This makes a long term relationship healthy.
