Boston Terrier Dogs - How to Deal With Separation Anxiety

103 18
Since Boston Terrier dogs are a very social breed, they may suffer from separation anxiety.
This anxiety can show up in several different ways including chewing all your belongings, destroying your house, (worried about your leather sofa when you leave?) excessive barking, self destructive behavior and unnecessarily relieving themselves.
When learning how to deal with separation anxiety, it is important to address these issues, as you could actually be contributing to the problem.
There are several things you can do to train your dog not to indulge in these destructive behaviors.
One of the best things to do is to make sure your dog is kept busy while you are away.
Providing your Boston Terrier with plenty of toys to play with can eliminate the chewing and house destruction.
Once you train him what he is allowed to chew on, you will save your belongings from damage.
Although Boston Terrier dogs prefer to be in a one-dog household, it may be a good idea to have a companion for him to play with if he is suffering from separation anxiety.
When you leave the house, do not make a big deal of it.
A long and drawn out goodbye can make matters worse by making your dog feel even more alone once you are gone.
These types of farewells can get your dog worked up and then he will have too much energy when you leave.
Make sure your Boston Terrier gets plenty of exercise to work off any excess energy before you have to leave him for the day.
At the same time, when you return home, do not encourage jumping up and barking or any other excessive misbehavior.
It's OK to say hello and let your Boston Terrier welcome you home, but not to let it go on for an extended amount of time.
Practice leaving and returning at intermittent times, several times during the day.
This will get your dog used to you coming and going and help him realize that you are not leaving him forever.
