Both weight gain and pregnancy are sensitive subjects.
Most of the time, when a woman has discovered that she is with a child, it is an amazing experience.
However, all too often, there is the misconception that a woman must eat everything in sight while pregnant.
A lot of the misconception surrounding overeating during pregnancy comes from the media and other general misunderstandings about proper pregnancy nutrition.
One thing that is for sure is that you can eat more when you are pregnant, just not as much as you probably think.
If you are currently underweight and are pregnant, then you should aim to gain at least 35 to 40 pounds.
If you are average, then 25 to 30 pounds would be necessary.
If you are overweight, then you should not gain anymore than approximately 15 to 20 pounds.
Most women are encouraged to consume about 100 to 300 calories more than their already recommended daily caloric intake.
For example, if you are currently overweight, then your daily caloric intake should be no more than about 2,000 calories.
If you are pregnant, then consuming about 2,300 should be sufficient enough to feed both you and your baby.
It is very understandable that women have cravings when carrying a child.
A lot of these are because their bodies are starving for more than just food.
What they need is nutrition, which is a big reason why women have cravings.
Instead of eating a greasy hamburger, look deeper into the craving and opt for a healthy, nutritious salad and steak.
If you crave milk chocolate, eat something else that contains a source of dairy, such as some beans or eggs.
Too much junk isn't healthy for an unborn child for all the obvious reasons.
Pregnancy weight gain shouldn't be an unpleasant experience for anyone.
There are mothers out there who prefer not to eat as much when they are pregnant in fear that they will become fat or undesirable.
This type of behavior can often result in a premature baby or sick, pregnant mother who has to be hospitalized due to malnutrition.
It is important to keep a food diary when you become pregnant.
Sure, it can be fun feeling like this is finally your chance to gorge on whatever you would like, but unfortunately, there is never an appropriate time for that.
However, no one says that you can't treat yourself to an occasional hot fudge sundae or small batch of chocolate-chip cookies every now and then.
Where would the fun be? Every woman deserves a little treat from time to time, just not everyday.
Keeping a food diary will help you to keep track of your cravings, and what you have eaten for the day.
If you are not quite up to par on your weight gain, then you will need to make the necessary adjustments.
If you are ahead, then you will need to eliminate some of your poor eating habits.
In the end, you will be glad that you maintained track of what you wanted while pregnant because you will have been able to feed both yours and your child's nutritional needs.
