How to Defeat the 3 Enemies of Success
I wrote an article a while ago about the 3 enemies of success, but this is an ongoing battle so I felt the need to write this follow up article.
Knowing about the 3 enemies of success is only half the battle, but this article will show you how to win the battle.
Habits- This is probably the most powerful enemy of all since we are all creatures of habits.
Most people are controlled by their habits, but the key to defeating them is to get your habits under control.
Many times when we think of habits, we think of physical habits like smoking, drinking, or drug abuse.
These are obviously detrimental to our success in every area of life.
So what are some other self-defeating habits that we may not give as much attention? Do you habitually get into trouble by hanging with the wrong crowd? Do you habitually get distracted or unfocused, get into unhealthy relationships, quit or give up easily, make excuses, tell lies, try to take short cuts, spend money impulsively, criticize and complain, get used or taken advantage of, talk too much, or offend people without even realizing it because you are so focused on your own selfish desires? What are your self-defeating habits? If you go through life without even realizing the habits that are causing you to fail repeatedly in life, then you have lost the race before even beginning.
Yes knowing may only be half the battle, but knowing what your self-defeating habits are is a big step! The challenge then becomes changing those limiting habits to empowering habits.
First learn which habits you need to have in order to reach your goals, then immediately start to develop those habits.
Excuses- The reason why excuses are so destructive is because they seem so harmless and they make us feel good about not doing something.
We love to feel justified.
Some excuses sound really great and they cause others to have sympathy for you.
Nonetheless, they are still excuses.
Any reason that you come up with for not doing something is an excuse.
This is an easy enemy to defeat.
Stop making excuses and start taking action now! This leads us to the final enemy.
Procrastination- It is hard to get something started.
The key to overcoming procrastination is to take action.
That is easier said than done.
So the secret is to develop the habit of taking action by doing a ridiculously simple productive activity consistently, and then gradually increase that activity.
For example, If you know you need to stop spending all of your money, develop the habit of saving by saving $1 month, and work your way to a to a larger amount.
If you need to eat healthier, start developing your health consciousness by ordering chicken nuggets instead of a double quarter pounder cheeseburger with your value meal, and then gradually work your way to not eating any fast food at all.
Also read one short health article per week.
If you need to get in shape, start by developing the habit of exercising by doing 5 pushups and 10 crunches per day, and then gradually work your way into going to the gym 3 times a week.
I think you get the point.
Much Success,
