Are You Losing Your Vertical?: Reasons Might Be

John Lakobe says: Sometimes I can jump and touch the rim and then after a few touches I just stop touching the ring

I think Australians call it the ring; we Americans call it the rim usually, right?

He says, Any suggestions why that is?

So this guys saying sometimes I can touch the rim and after I touch it a few times I stop being able to touch it, why is that, what is going on? Well there are a lot of things that can be going on, the most simple thing is that you have just jumped to your highest five times in a row and you are getting tired. So that is definitely one thing it could be.

Reasons You May Be Jumping Lower

Another thing it could be is that you are less or more warmed up. I find that happens a lot to people that are going to the gym one day and they will do well, and then another day they are going to the gym and say, man my vertical has dropped. You should understand that your vertical can go up and down on a day to day, week to week basis. So one week today, just because your vertical leap seems down doesnt mean that your vertical is gone forever. It just means that sometimes your energy levels are higher. It could be because of sleep, it could be because of your diet, it could be because of work load, it could be because of a full moon, who knows? It could be because of a lot of things, so dont get discouraged.

Reasons You Are Jumping Higher

And on the other hand if one day you are feeling amazing, maybe you have adrenaline coursing through your system and you are just feeling foxy or maybe some suitor or some girl you like is watching you from the sidelines and you are doing something to impress them. There are a lot of reasons that can raise our performance as well. The important thing is that overtime we see our average performance go up and we see our ability to reach a max performance go up as well.

So we see our high days get higher, we see our low days get higher, and we see our average days get higher. So we want to see an increase along all of those. So dont get discouraged if you see an up and down type of pattern, you are going to see that when you work. Because if you work out correctly it is going to make you jump lower probably by the end of the work out and maybe even for a few days following it, depending on how well you recover and how much experience you have with it.

Dont get frustrated, its just the way it is, its just life. You know go up, you break down your muscles, and then you go back up. You have probably seen the other videos where we have talked about that.

Tips To Help Measure Your Vertical Leap Better

The important thing is that I like to do is I like to one, bring a measuring tape. Because sometimes you get to a rim and you think man I have been dunking on this thing easily and it just happens to be 2 inches lower, which is very common. In fact, here in Mexico some of the rims are an inch higher or an inch lower on the other side of the court. So I know in the first half it is going to be dunk city and in the second half it wont be quite as easy, because even 2 inches can make quite a bit of difference.

So anyways, I like to take my tape measure and I like to see how high I am actually jumping on these days that feel great. So I can get an actual kind of constant feel. So bring a tape measure, take your tape measure and just reach up into the air and stick your tape measure up and find a spot and say, hey you know I know my maximum, on my good day Im jumping 33 inches. So find something that is 33 inches high and reach up and get it.

So dont judge by the rim because rims vary a lot. It just happens. I have seen people just dunking anywhere. There are different levels of rims all over the place even in places like colleges, even in community centers, and even in obviously out door places, so just something to be aware of. Hope that has been helpful to you, if it hasnt, well I did what I could. Leave your comments below.
