How to Select a Bowling Ball Weight

    • 1). Find the recommended weight or weight range for your sex and age. This is a good starting point for selecting the bowling ball weight that’s best for you. Adult women and seniors should begin with a ball in the 10 to 14 pound range. Adult men should begin with a ball in the 14 to 16 pound range. Children should begin with a ball that is the same weight as their age (e.g. a 7-year-old should begin with a 7-pound ball).

    • 2). Assess your physique. Consider your height, weight and strength. Those who are short, lightweight and/or weak should begin with a ball at the lighter end of their range. Those who are tall, heavy and/or strong should begin with a ball at the heavier end of their range.

    • 3). Pick up the recommended weight ball. Practice swinging the ball without releasing it to ensure that you are able to complete your swing fluidly and without difficulty. If you feel as though your arm is being propelled too far upward at the end of your swing, try using a heavier ball. If you feel as though you are unable to complete the entire swinging motion or that it is difficult to raise your arm toward the end of your swing, try a lighter ball.

    • 4). Bowl a few frames using the ball weight you selected. Then bowl a few frames using a ball 1 pound lighter and 1 pound heavier. See which you prefer. If you prefer the heavier or lighter one, then try one that’s 2 pounds heavier or lighter than your original choice. Continue trying and comparing balls until you find the one that works best for you.
