How to Replace a Toilet Fill Valve With a Ballcock
- 1). Turn off the water to the toilet. Turn the shut-off valve (found behind the toilet, normally to the left and approximately 6 inches off the floor) completely clockwise. Remove the tank lid. Flush the toilet and continue pressing down on the handle in order to allow as much water as possible to drain out the tank. Use a towel to sponge up the small amount of water that remains in the tank, even after flushing.
- 2). Disconnect the refill tube from the top of the overflow tube. Unscrew and disconnect the supply line's coupling nut from the threaded shank on the bottom of the fill valve, underneath the tank. Use a wrench. Hold the fill valve with one hand, and unscrew and remove the lock nut that secures the fill valve in the tank. Any leftover water will now drain from the hole, onto the towel below, as you lift the fill valve out the tank. Wipe the area clean around the hole where you removed the fill valve using a towel.
- 3). Turn the threaded shank on the bottom of the new ballcock, to adjust the ballcock's height to properly fit the tank. Install the rubber washer onto the bottom of the ballcock. Place the ballcock into position in the tank, inserting the bottom of the ballcock, the tailpiece, into the tank opening. Hold the ballcock with one hand while screwing on the retaining, or mounting, nut onto the ballcock tailpiece underneath the tank.
- 4). Screw the float arm into the float arm socket of the ballcock, making certain that the float arm passes freely behind the tank's overflow tube without interfering with it. Attach the float ball onto the end of the float arm, screwing it into place. Clip the new refill tube from the ballcock onto the top of the overflow pipe, being sure not to simply stuff the refill tube down into the overflow pipe.
- 5). Hand tighten the coupling nut of the water supply line to the bottom of the ballcock tailpiece, followed by 1/4 turn with the wrench. Turn the shut-off valve counter-clockwise, in order to allow the tank to refill with water. Check for any leaks around the tank. Observe the water level in tank and adjust the ballcock to bring the level even with the tank's waterline mark. Slightly bend the ballcock's float arm up to raise the water level; slightly bend the float arm down to lower the water level. Place the lid on the tank.
