Before your consider becoming a dog trainer you should ask yourself whether you would like to work with people and dogs. Many people who want to become dog trainers forget that they are there to train people so that that can in return train their dogs. A lot of patience is required for this task, and it is equally important for you to coach people as well as dogs. Most people start of by being an apprentice with a professional dog trainer, or they register with a dog training academy.

First you should teach yourself by attending seminars, reading dog training books and registering for dog training programs. By reading self-help books and watching dog training DVDs on your own will not be enough. You will quickly find out that there a numerous way for dogs to be trained, and it can be confusing if you just rely on self-help books and DVDs.

Next, you do not have to posses a degree in order to become a dog trainer. You should however be responsible enough to obtain an education in order to follow this profession. You will also require some practical experience before you can recommend your services to members of the public. A good place to start is to offer your services at a local dog training school.

You will probably first start by observing how the professionals train their dogs and then later on you will get the chance to try it on your own. You can learn to manage dogs in training by going through a training facility where you get the opportunity to handle real dogs and teach them the fundamentals of obedience training.

Whilst getting the hands-on training at a dog training facility, you can learn and sign up at a school offering dog training courses. These should offer you a general idea of the different training approaches and attitudes. This will in return allow you to decide on a style that will best suit you.

Being registered at the dog training schools will expose you to diverse instructors that present a big diversity of ideas and training methods when it comes to the handling of dogs.

The third thing to consider is whether you would be able to handle a large group of people and dogs, or whether you would prefer to do private dog training lessons. Regardless from whether work as a dog trainer on a full-time basis or part-time basis, it still depends on how many classes you can handle.
