Hardieplank Types
- Hardieplank is a fiber-cement siding product manufactured by the James Hardie company with operations in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. Fiber-cement siding like Hardieplank does not melt with exposure to heat, is rot-resistant, wind-resistant and impervious to termites. Fiber-cement siding may be required by some building codes, particularly in hurricane-prone areas. Hardieplank is available in a variety of styles.
- The custom colonial rough-sawn style features 12-foot planks with a finely grained pattern. Custom colonial smooth style doesn't have the grained pattern. A smooth, recessed trough gives this finished siding a different look. Rather than appearing to be overlapping planks, there appears to be a smooth break between the planks. The planks are 8 inches wide and leave a 6.75-inch exposure after they are overlapped. Each plank has a thickness of 5/16 of an inch and weighs 2.3 lbs. per square foot. - The select cedar-mill style has a pronounced wood grain and is designed to closely resemble wood plank siding. The planks are 12 feet long. Select cedar mill comes in a variety of widths: 5.25 inches, 6.25 inches, 7.25 inches and 8.25 inches exposing 4, 5, 6 and 7 inches, respectively, after overlapping. The planks are 5/16 of an inch thick and weigh 2.3 lbs. per square foot. - Beaded cedar-mill style features a rounded lip at the bottom edge of the plank for a decorative appearance. It features a deep wood grain design. The planks are 12 feet long with a width of 8.25 inches, leaving 7 inches exposed after the planks are overlapped. The weight is 2.3 lbs. per square foot. Beaded cedar mill comes in 26 colors in shades of brown, beige, green, yellow, white, gray and red.
- The smooth style has no grain or pattern on the planks. This style comes in 12 foot lengths and widths of 5.25, 6.25, 7.25 and 8.25 inches leaving respective exposures of 4, 5, 6 and 7 inches after the planks are overlapped.
