Information on Cleaning Pool Filters
- Pool filter manufacturers recommend regularly cleaning the filter, usually about once a month; this schedule is usually outlined in the owner's manual and varies by manufacturer and filter type. While the general recommendation is to clean the filter on a specified schedule, cleaning is also determined by the filter's appearance.
If the filter looks dirty, and especially when the pump does not clean the pool water effectively, the recommendation is to clean the filter. The need to change the filter may vary based on the usage hours, the number of people who use the pool and how often you run the pump. - Most pool filters sit within the middle of the pump. Access the filter by opening the top of the pump. Manufacturers often recommend washing the filter once before removing it from the pump to remove some of the dirt and spraying with a water hose to wash the filter. They then recommend removing the filter from the pump and spraying it with the hose again until it appears clean, making sure to spray between the pleats. Again, allow it to drain thoroughly before placing it back in the pump. Some manufacturers suggest using an additional cleaning product to remove scale or oil buildup.
- Pool filter manufacturers recommend replacing the filter in certain situations instead of cleaning it. If you notice holes or other damage on the filter, it's time for a replacement. Additionally if the filter does not appear clean after a thorough cleaning, you may need to replace the filter. Sometimes manufacturers provide a guideline on how often to replace the filter; a filter, even with repeated cleanings and no signs of damage, may not work as effectively over time.
- Always unplug the pump before cleaning or replacing the filter. When unplugging or plugging in the pool pump, stay out of the water and keep your hands dry to avoid electric shock. Do not use cleaners or any type of chemical to clean the filter, unless the manufacturer recommends them. After installing a new filter, check the installation of all the hoses; all should feel tightened securely to both the pump and the pool.
