Redox, or reduction-oxidation potential, is a measure of the ability of water to allow biological reactions to take place. In an aquarium, this is an indicator of water quality, measured in millivolts with a special probe. Redox can be measured with special electronic probes. Higher values are preferable, and indicate superior water conditions to water with a low redox reading. Redox controllers use an ozone reactor to raise the redox potential.
Redox is often reported as ORP, or Oxidation Reduction Potential. An ORP reading between +300 and -100 mV is recomended for marine aquariums and between +125 and -200 mV for freshwater aquariums and ponds. Algae is known to react differently to changes in the redox potential. Generally, high ORP levels promote the growth of green algae while suppressing the growth of brown algae and red algae.
